Latifa is our 55 years old patient, who became an amputee earlier this year. She is suffering from diabetes, that caused her ulcers and leads to amputating her leg. According to the World Health Organization, in Afghanistan diabetes goes unnoticed and it is stated that ” 8.4% of the population, or around 2.7 million Afghans, suffer from diabetes.”. Latifa’s body was getting less effective at fighting infections in her leg, and her wounds were not healing, which caused her leg to get amputated.
Latifa is living in Kabul the capital city of Afghanistan, she is smiling and was telling me to make her a new limb. She asked me if I can get her a new prosthetic leg like “Ahmad Rahman“, she would also like to get up and dance like him.
The most inspiring thing about such patients is their desire to still live and be happy no matter what they face in their life. Latifa is indeed one of the patients I will remember.
